Claude Monet's "Houses of Parliament" series is a masterpiece of Impressionism, created between 1899 and 1901 during his stays in London. These oil paintings capture the iconic Palace of Westminster, home of the British Parliament, from a window at St Thomas' Hospital overlooking the Thames. Monet produced nearly 100 canvases in this series. The paintings showcase the artist's fascination with light, atmosphere, and the changing effects of weather on architecture. Monet depicted the Gothic spires of the Parliament building at various times of day and in different atmospheric conditions, from misty mornings to fiery sunsets. The series exemplifies Monet's innovative approach to capturing fleeting moments. He abandoned his earlier practice of completing paintings on-site, instead refining the works back in his studio in Giverny, France.
